The collaboration with the CSTB has been spread out over many years and has made it possible, through several theses, in particular, to study in depth the behavior of concrete at high temperature: thermal and mechanical properties, the phenomenon of spalling and transient thermal deformation.

The aim of these studies is both to develop knowledge in the field and also to develop the skills at CSTB useful for its evaluation and standardization work.

Ultra-fluid cementitious composite for the storage of radioactive waste subject to fire risk

The objective of the UCOMP project is the design of ultra-fluid fiber-reinforced cementitious materials for the manufacture of waste containers exposed to fire risk.

This research project must allow the design of ultra-fluid composite cementitious materials that can resist very high temperatures. It is at a medium level of technological maturity and we aim to move from TRL 4 to TRL 6. Indeed, although concretes containing organic fibres are used in the tunnel industry, their formulation will be studied, in an original way, by adopting a combined global approach including rheological, mechanical and thermal aspects. They will also be adapted for the specific case of nuclear waste containment. As fire resistance and fluidity evolve in a contrary way with the addition of organic fibers, we first aim to identify the levers allowing an optimization of these two properties. The analysis will first be carried out at the microscopic level both to better understand the underlying phenomena and to determine the minimum dosage and fiber properties required to achieve the targeted properties. Laboratory scale and prototype tests will allow the evaluation of the rheological and fire behaviour of new materials dedicated to the fabrication of nuclear waste containers.
