Investment for the future project: TANDEM
The project “Tsunamis in the Atlantic and the Channel: definition of effects by modeling (TANDEM)” is a research project created in response to the call for projects “Research on nuclear security and radiation protection” (RSNR) initiated by the ANR (French national research agency) as part of the “Investment for the future” program.
The objective is to evaluate the effects of a tsunami would have on the French coast, particularly the shorelines of the Atlantic and the Channel, where civil nuclear installations have been operated over the past 30 years. It is composed of a large community of researchers, geologists, geophysicists and modelers. Engineers and geophysicists are expected to work in close cooperation. TANDEM is focused on learning from the 2011 Tohoku disaster in Japan. We all recall the terrible consequences on the nuclear site of Fukushima. This project will seek to introduce new methods of numerical analysis which will be tested and adapted using the databases recovered after the tsunami of March 11, 2011. When these methods have been validated, they will be applied to the French coast to define the consequences that a tsunami of this scale could have.
